How to Teach Numbers to Very Young Kids

Teaching numbers to very young kids could be very confusing and difficult especially to those who still do not understand how numbers work. As a teacher, you should use different visual aids so as to aid the kids to grasp the lesson better. Real objects, flash cards, DVD's, videos and charts are very helpful in the process of teaching.

While math is an interesting subject to teach the kids, it could be very confusing to the small kids who do not understand how numbers work.  Children who are not yet well versed with the numbers game will find Math very confusing and very difficult to understand. 

The first step that you must do is to introduce the numbers first to the kids by using charts, real objects and flash cards.  Let them watch as you count and flash the numbers in front.  You can explain to them about counting by using real objects and letting them touch and count.  Of course you have to always start with number 1.  For very young children start with 1 number at a time and teach the number for three days.  If the kids will get used to counting and reading the numbers it would become easier for them to spot the numbers.  This is the time that you can use two or three numbers at a time.  Children can easily learn how to count and distinguish numbers through repeat action.  Math is all about repetition and letting the kids recite the numbers daily will make them memorize the numbers and easily spot each number.

People often say that Math is the easiest subject to teach and to learn because there is not much to memorize. There are only formulas to keep in mind and math is a repeat action. There really is no need to memorize long sentences or long words. But to a child who has no inkling in math, math is a torture.

Beginners must be made aware of how numbers work and what numbers are. When I was pregnant with my son, I always played the nursery rhymes. I read about how unborn babies react to their environment and I started nurturing my child with lots of things while still in my womb. Not only would I play the nursery rhymes but I also counted and talked to my baby. When he was born, I started buying books for him. Even when he was still a few weeks old, I read to him books and counted to him. I also showed pictures to him and counted as he listened to me.

At the age of six months, my son although he still couldn't talk could mumble and make signs that he was counting his fingers. As I counted one to ten, he was moving his fingers one by one with the numbers I said. When my son grew up he was good. I wouldn't say he is scholarly but at least he was able to cope with his studies and he loved math. He was good in math and he loved numbers. I realized that this is the product of my patience in teaching him once he was conceived. 

In the school where I teach very young children, I noticed that some children really couldn't understand math. They just frown and stare at me while I am doing the addition which means that they don’t understand how math is done.

Teaching Math is easy.  When you are teaching the kids how to count, always start with real objects.  Get real objects and let the kids count them one by one. Do not attempt to force the child to understand how to add or subtract on the first day of the lesson. A child who is weak in math will always find numbers to be very confusing and hard to understand but with the repeat process, the child will always learn. Always give a lot of exercises for the child to do in math. A child will finally enjoy numbers if he discovers how to do it by himself.  Adding and subtracting is one of the interesting lessons in Math.  Once the kids understand the trick to adding and subtracting you will notice that they start to participate in Math activities.

When a child learns a new lesson and understands it well, he will enjoy doing it. Children love it when they can already add, subtract, multiply or divide. These are the four operations in math that children enjoy doing once they learn how to do the process. There are children who don't like numbers but you can make numbers work for the kids by using proper motivations and tools.
